Democratic lawmakers Denounce Trump After He States They Should Face Death Penalty
Democratic officials demonstrated anger after former President Donald Trump charged a coalition of Democratic legislators of being "betrayers" and declared they should be arrested and sentenced "by death" following their publication of a disputed video.
The Recording That Sparked the Controversy
The clip, published on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic congress members who in the past worked in military or intelligence capacities.
"Similar to us, you all took an oath to defend and uphold this national charter," the representatives declared in the 90-second video. "At present, the dangers to our governing document are not only from abroad, but from right here at home. Our laws are unambiguous, you can refuse improper directives, you can reject improper directives, you must refuse unlawful commands. No one has to execute directives that violate the legal system or our constitution."
Trump's Incensed Reply
The recorded statement appeared to trigger a furious reaction from the ex-president.
On the following morning, Trump wrote on his preferred platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate post, he declared: "This constitutes really concerning, and Risky to our United States. Their comments cannot be permitted to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third message, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a statement that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Officials Respond
Following Trump's remarks on that day, Democratic leadership released a combined statement censuring the remarks.
"Violent politics has no position in the United States," they declared. "Elected officials who participated in the video all worked our United States with exceptional patriotism and honor. We unequivocally denounce Donald Trump's offensive and dangerous death threats against elected officials, and appeal to GOP representatives to vigorously do the same."
The opposition officials also mentioned that they had been in communication with protective services "to ensure the protection of these members and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must right away take down these radical online messages and retract his aggressive language before he gets someone killed," the statement added.
Officials' Strong Reaction
The officials who appeared in the video also published a statement.
"We serve as former service members and defense specialists who care for this country and swore an vow to protect and uphold the constitution of the United States," they declared. "This commitment continues forever, and we plan to keep it. No intimidation, coercion, or incitement will stop us from that important responsibility."
"The significant point is that the president deems it punishable by death for us to restate the law," they stated. "Armed forces members should understand that we have their support as they carry out their oath to the founding principles and duty to follow only lawful orders. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They continued: "Every American must come together and denounce the president's demands for our execution and partisan aggression. This is a moment for ethical certainty."
Further Partisan Responses
The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's remarks and posted on social media: "We must be absolutely clear: the former president is requesting the capital punishment of government members."
He stated: "This represents an outright THREAT. Every Senator, each house member, the entire nation – irrespective of political affiliation – should condemn this right away and without qualification."
The Conservative official justified Trump's claim that the Democrats had been involved in "sedition", describing the video as "extremely improper", stating: "It is very harmful, you have leading members of Congress advising military personnel to disobey orders, I think that is without precedent in American history."
The Conservative representative also reportedly stated to the press that in what he read of Trump's messages, Trump was "defining the violation of treason" but that "lawyers have to parse the language and establish all that."
Executive Branch Reaction
During a White House press conference on that day, when inquired by a reporter, "Is the president want to put to death congressional representatives?", the executive branch representative replied: "Absolutely not."
"We should understand about what the president is reacting to," the official said. "There are active officials of the American legislature who coordinated to orchestrate a recorded statement to members of the US military, to active duty service members advising them to disobey the president's proper directives."
She said: "The purity of our military depends on the hierarchy, and if that structure is broken, it can cause casualties, it can cause confusion, and that is exactly what these elected officials ... are fundamentally supporting."
