Felicity Cloake's 60-Minute Party Strategy: Effortless Entertaining for Last-Minute Visitors
During the busy period, when there's plenty happening that the most energetic people might sometimes long for the calm respite in January, it's all too easy to neglect things. I'm sure I'm not the sole one who's once felt surprised awake while at work because of a text by a friend asking, "What time should we come us tonight?" Fear not; whether you're absent minded, and simply inclined toward impromptu invitations, I've got some solutions.
The Golden Rule to Successful Parties
First and foremost, though I cannot emphasize it enough, whether you have been planning for months or just a quarter-hour, the best events are the easiest. All everyone really wants is a good chat, something to drink, and sufficient food that they do not feel like chewing something on the bus back. If you're not you're a fictional millionaire, nobody expects professional bartending, Michelin-starred food and a live band.
The most successful parties tend to be the easiest. Still, a theme helps to cover up the reality you've just thrown the party on on the way back from the office.
Picking a Style to Focus The Preparations
Still, a theme works well to conceal that you have only thrown the party on on the way from the office. And by theme, think of for example the holidays. Going slightly focused (Scandinavian Christmas, say, with mulled wine, warm beverage, fish snacks plus flatbreads, Nordic beats selection; alternatively fiesta-style party, including traditional drink, cold beers and cocktails, along with plenty of corn chips, salsa & avocado dip, and festive music on the stereo) can narrow your choices during the upcoming shopping trip.
Strategic Buying to Support The Party
At the shops, select one or two beverages (one alcoholic if you drink, a non-alcoholic one in case others avoid alcohol) and a few snacks suited to the theme, then buy a generous amount within your budget, instead of worrying about providing endless options. Nothing appears more welcoming and as festive as a bounty – I would consistently prefer to arrive by a sink full of chilled bottles of competitively priced bubbly over a single glass with expensive bubbly. (Add several packs of ice, as well; there is never sufficient ice.)
Cocktails & Punch Made Easy
Should you show off and provide a cocktail, make sure to prepare ahead a big quantity in a jug so that you aren't left busying yourself with it when you ought to be having fun. After starting, enlist a close friend or friend to watch it then top up as necessary until it's gone. Apply the same for the soft drink; people enjoy to be given a task while socializing so they may experience some of positive vibes.
Regarding punch, whatever recipe you choose (they abound via search), steer clear of anything overly sugary – young ones present should have their own drinks – and if it's available, put flavor enhancers nearby (don't add them in the mix as they are inappropriate for those abstaining from drinks entirely). Take care in presenting it so the soft punch doesn't seem like an afterthought; it only takes a moment to slice several pieces of lemon or orange to the punch.
Snacks That Delight Without Effort
For me, I'd skip the store-bought platters with "party foods" available in shops at this time of year; they feel fancy, and frequently require using the oven (if you choose to go this route, be aware that everyone quietly prefers herb bread and/or cocktail sausages anyway). I'm convinced nothing beats a couple of really big containers with decent chips (plain salted pleases everyone), and, assuming no issues, a package of large and economical bags of mixed nuts typically found with global foods of supermarkets, and maybe a few olives without stones as a garnish (it's best to avoid to find stones in your pot plants in the future).
If, similar to some, you don't consider chips substantial fare, a single big slab of good cheese on a platter and crispbreads and some beautifully placed grapes often appears visually appealing. A serving dish with some salted or prepared salami or salmon laid out on it (just one sort, except if money is no object), alternatively a nice pre-made pastry, similar to available on deli counters during festivities, is more filling, and you truly can't go wrong with artisanal chunks of flatbread, since they don't need additional preparation.
