A defense minister has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is currently looking into the potential security risks associated with Chinese-made vehicles, and staff have been instructed to avoid talking about secret matters in all vehicles.
Security Advice for MoD Staff
During a recently aired interview on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed claims that MoD staff have been told not to talk about secret information while riding in Chinese cars.
He stated that the MoD is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, but noted that security is a issue in all contemporary vehicles.
Our department has a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug Ministry of Defence devices into their vehicle, to avoid having conversations at a secret classification in any car, due to the increasing risks of eavesdropping that are present in all vehicle, to restrict those confidential conversations in protected areas. This is a wise and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about security.
When it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using every cars from China, the minister replied: That is precisely what we are looking into at the moment.”
Wider Security Background
The announcement comes as claims from Norway and Denmark have alerted the UK to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could enable China to disable public transport and cause chaos to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russia spy ship has been directing laser beams at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “extremely risky” action by government representatives.
The wider security environment underscores the significance of strong protocols and caution in every areas of official activities, from vehicle use to discussions practices.
