New York's next mayor affirms plans to reside in the iconic Gracie Mansion
New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the affordable apartment that was a central issue throughout his campaign.
A Traditional Abode
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for nearly all New York City mayors from the post-war period.
However, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a core policy, did not confirm this decision immediately following his triumph in November.
"This decision came down to the security of my family and the imperative to focusing my full attention on carrying out the affordability agenda the city's residents elected me on," stated Mamdani in a statement.
Leaving Astoria
Mamdani lived in Astoria, Queens, an area known for its vibrant cultural enclaves and culinary diversity.
"To the people of Astoria: thank you for showing us the true spirit of New York City," he noted.
"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, the community will forever remain a part of me and my work," he affirmed.
Political Debate
During his election campaign, Mamdani linked his key pledge – halting rent increases – to his circumstances as a tenant.
However his opponents, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the affordable housing although he came from a prominent family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side for his tenure, which concluded in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg argued it could serve as a venue for official events, and championed a major refurbishment of the older mansion.
A Stately Residence
As he settles into Gracie Mansion for his first day on 1 January, he will experience an environment a stark contrast to his humble Astoria home.
Featuring pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure overlooking the East River.
Inside, the ground floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed consistent with the home's original era.
The estate, which reportedly has several bedrooms, also has increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
Past occupants have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care the skeptics say," he declared in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
His former home is under rent control, which means the city imposes caps on how much property owners can hike the monthly cost each year.
New Yorkers consider these apartments crucial resources as the price of rent exceeds the means of many residents.
It was reported Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to real estate analysts Zillow, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
