Scream OG Star the Actor Is Anxious He Could Spoil the Series with the Seventh Installment.
The long-awaited slasher sequel Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters in the coming year, and it is preparing for a massive family reunion. This latest installment signals the legendary comeback of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the previous film. She will, as usual, be joined by Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only fan-favorite characters returning to the fray.
"Coming back to a character you played in your twenties when you're 55 was a challenge that gave me sleepless nights," the actor admits.
An Unexpected Return for Fallen Favorites
It has been established that a trio of different characters from earlier films are set to return in this latest sequel, despite dying in prior movies. The precise method of their resurrection is still unclear. Audiences should prepare for the return of the beloved and seemingly immortal officer Dewey Riley, the director and third film antagonist Roman Bridger, and one half of the original murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Weight of Legendary Status
For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the series for the first time since a brief appearance is a long-held wish, though he is apprehensive about the audience response. The performer vividly recalls the exact moment he got the offer from the series creator.
"I remember the phone call. I recall the pleasantries. I remember him asking. That instance is indelibly imprinted on my mind," he states. "So I'm really proud to be back. I'm really excited to be back."
Stu Macher has attained cult status in the decades since the original film was released, which made Lillard feeling very nervous.
"The reality is, that's a role that lives in infamy, like it or not," he explains. "A part that is now represented in every single Ghostface mask that walks around every Halloween."
The Fear of Disappointing the Fandom
Now that production has concluded, Lillard is waiting like the rest of us to see the final product. He admits to feeling significant anxiety about not wanting to be the one who damages the beloved series.
"The outcome is either a hit and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard observes. "Going into it, I don't know if the movie's gonna work. I am unsure if people are eager to see me. I've definitely seen plenty of people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this idea?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not mess up the franchise. I hope people exiting Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"
Theories and Excitement Abound
While countless dedicated fans are eagerly awaiting Stu's reappearance, the central mystery of how he and the others return remains. Perhaps they live as manifestations in Sidney's consciousness, similar to a previous plot device. Or, perhaps they are in some way all alive in a bizarre communal situation. The chance of a self-referential narrative, inspired by earlier horror movies, also is on the table.
Audiences will discover the answer when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
