Vince Gilligan Reveals He Knows How The Apple TV+ Show Will Conclude... Currently.

The creative mastermind did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would become a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” he remarks. “I was surprised by the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

With the first season of the popular sci-fi show reaching its finale—and Season 2 greenlit and underway—Gilligan and his team reflected on the viewer reception and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.

On the Incredible Audience Reaction

It would be easy to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and fan theories surrounding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is making a conscious effort to avoid both.

“It feels like force fed something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he describes. “It's wonderful, but I learn of it anecdotally, and that's on purpose. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”

Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s no way to avoid the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to accept it graciously and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.

“It is not our goal to tailor anything,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by what people are saying.”

“Better to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.

The Big Question: Has the creator Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus?

Considering the writers aren’t being guided by public opinion, does it imply they have mapped out how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? In short yes… with some caveats.

“We have some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to discard a solid concept for a superior concept. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we find a more perfect path and I imagine we will be doing that.”

Then again, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to fall back on.

“I constantly suggest that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and we're in there,” Smith quips, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Then again, why not reference the classics?

“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed with Bob Newhart there,” he jokes.

Pluribus is currently available on Apple TV.
